They Fined Jack for One Farm Sign—Then He Counted Nine of Theirs Along the Same Private Road

Chapter 1: The Fine Waiting Inside Jack’s Farm Mailbox

The orange sign was gone.

Jack Carter noticed the empty wire stakes before he noticed anything else.

They stood crooked in the grass beside his cattle gate, two thin pieces of metal catching the morning light where the sign had been the night before. Beyond them, the gravel lane curved between his pasture fence and the line of cedars toward the county road.

Jack stopped his truck halfway through the gate.

For three days the sign had read FARM OPEN SATURDAY, with an arrow pointing toward the old equipment shed where his real-estate agent planned to meet people interested in the sixteen-acre parcel Jack was selling from the far edge of the property.

The sale itself already felt like something he preferred not to discuss.

He climbed out, crossed the gravel, and pulled one stake free.

No torn cardboard. No bent sign lying in the ditch. Someone had removed it cleanly.
