They Mocked the Farmhand Who Rode an Old Bicycle—Then Trusted Him With the Harvest Account

Chapter 1: The Bicycle Beside Six Expensive Pickups

Jessica Baker looked from Brian Lewis’s bicycle to the row of pickups outside the machinery shed and laughed before he had both feet on the gravel.

“You ride that thing twelve miles out here?”

Brian slid the cable lock through the rear wheel.

“Eleven and a half.”

Jessica leaned against the fender of a new diesel pickup, coffee in one hand, sunglasses pushed into her hair. Beyond her, six trucks sat in a dusty line beside two combines and a grain cart worth more than Brian’s father had earned in years of painting houses.

She looked at his faded bicycle again.

“And you think they’re going to trust you around this equipment?”

Two members of the irrigation crew heard her. One smiled and looked away.
