Chapter 1: The Car Everyone Decided Meant Failure

The white envelope was taped to the windshield directly above a rust spot Larry had been promising for two years to sand down.

Brandon saw it before he saw anything else.

He stopped halfway down the front walk with his laptop bag over one shoulder and coffee in his hand. The silver sedan sat crooked in the driveway exactly where his father had left it the night before, clean enough to reflect the garage door but old enough that no amount of washing could disguise its faded hood.

Across the top of the envelope were three words:

PROPERTY COMPLIANCE NOTICE.

“Dad.”

Larry was kneeling beside a planter near the porch, trimming dead leaves from a hosta.

“Morning.”
