She Brought Deputies and a Repair Bill, but the Rancher Would Not Sign

Chapter 1: The Bill She Set Beside His Coffee

The first deputy’s truck had barely stopped before John Harris noticed something was wrong.

Not with the trucks. Not with the dust rolling behind them across the ranch yard. Not even with the woman stepping out in a deep purple jacket that looked more suited for a city office than a fence line.

The problem was the way everyone looked at him.

John sat in the old wooden chair beside the red barn, one hand wrapped around his white ceramic coffee mug. The afternoon heat had settled over the pasture, and the cattle were quiet beyond the fence. He had been watching a loose gate hinge near the equipment shed when the vehicles arrived.

Now Laura Roberts stood in front of him with two deputies behind her and a folder tucked under her arm.

She had already decided how the conversation would end.

“John,” she said, walking closer, “we can do this the easy way.”

John looked at the paper in her hand before he looked at her face.
