The Neighbor Called My Ruined Garden an Accident Until the HOA Learned Why the Gate Stayed Open

Chapter 1: The Third Footprint Was No Longer an Accident

The zucchini plant was lying on its side when Andrew Mitchell reached the garden.

Its roots, normally buried beneath six inches of dark soil, were exposed to the morning air like a fistful of pale wires. One broad leaf had been crushed into the path. Beyond it, two tomato cages leaned at different angles, and a line of small shoe prints crossed the damp bed toward the rear gate.

The gate was swinging open.

Andrew heard children laughing on the other side of the fence.

“Hey.”

He did not shout it. He rarely shouted anything.

The laughter stopped for half a second, then footsteps hurried across the narrow strip between the yards.

Andrew stood with the zucchini plant in his hands.
