The HOA Fined Benjamin for Parking in His Own Space, So He Read Every Rule They Ignored

Chapter 1: The Orange Notice Waiting in Space Fourteen

The orange notice was tucked beneath Benjamin Green’s windshield wiper like someone had taken care to make sure he could not miss it.

He saw the fluorescent paper before he noticed the white SUV filling his assigned parking space.

Benjamin stopped beside his car, one hand still holding his work bag. The vehicle sat crookedly in space 14, its rear tire covering part of the painted number. He recognized it immediately. Donald Hall, the HOA president, drove it to every board meeting and parked it near the clubhouse even when closer spaces were open.

Benjamin’s own car stood along the opposite curb, where he had left it after returning from work and finding his space occupied.

He pulled the notice free.

UNAUTHORIZED PARKING.

A second line warned of a possible fine for continued violations. The time recorded at the bottom was 6:12 p.m. Benjamin checked his phone. It was 6:29.

Across the lot, Donald was speaking with one of the board members near the clubhouse steps. He wore pressed khakis and a navy sweater despite the evening heat. When Benjamin raised the orange paper, Donald looked at it, then at Benjamin, as though both belonged to a problem already assigned to someone else.
