The HOA President Threatened Her Father’s Fence Until She Found a Dead Man’s Signature

Chapter 1: The Yellow Notice Against the Screen Door

The yellow paper struck the screen door hard enough to make the latch jump.

Katherine Nelson looked through the mesh at the man standing on her porch. Richard Hall held the notice flat against the door with two fingers, as if pinning evidence to a board. Behind him, the wooden swing beneath the pecan tree moved in a slow arc, though the morning air was still.

“You have until Friday,” he said. “After that, the association will hire a contractor.”

Katherine did not open the door.

It was seven minutes past seven. She had been awake for less than half an hour, wearing the blue housecoat she had found hanging behind her father’s bedroom door three weeks earlier. Across the lane, a garage door had stopped halfway up. Someone stood in its shadow. Farther down, a woman paused beside a mailbox with a newspaper tucked under her arm.

Richard had chosen his hour well.

“For what?” Katherine asked.

He tapped the yellow sheet. “Removal of the fence. Reimbursement of contractor costs. Administrative penalties. You’ll sign acknowledgment at the bottom.”
