The Neighbor Who Tried to Demolish My Father’s Shed Uncovered What I Had Been Hiding Inside

Chapter 1: The Complaint Photographs Were Already Circulating Before Rebecca Opened Her Door

At 5:47 Monday morning, Rebecca Martin found a photograph of her father’s shed in her inbox with the word HAZARD stamped across it in red.

She had not yet opened her bedroom curtains.

For a few seconds she lay propped against the headboard, phone cold in her hand, staring at an image taken from an angle she recognized immediately: Jennifer White’s side yard, just beyond the six-foot privacy fence.

The photograph made the shed look worse than it did from Rebecca’s kitchen window.

Not much worse, she admitted.

The corrugated metal roof had rust along its lower edge. One gutter corner sagged. The western boards had grayed almost silver, and two near the sill had darkened after years of sprinkler overspray. A hinge bled orange streaks down the door.

Under the picture, Jennifer had written:

Several homeowners have raised concerns about the abandoned structure adjoining my property. Possible pest activity, structural instability, and continuing deterioration should be addressed before someone is injured.
