They Ordered the Old Veteran Aside Before an Entire Ballroom Parted for Him

Chapter 1: The Old Man Outside the Velvet Rope

“Move aside. The important guests are arriving.”

Christopher Lewis stepped into William Miller’s path with one polished shoe planted on the edge of the red carpet.

Behind him, the entrance to the military ball blazed with chandeliers and camera flashes. Officers in dark dress uniforms moved through the glass doors beside civilians in evening gowns. A string ensemble played somewhere beyond the registration tables, its music softened by the steady closing of limousine doors.

William looked past Christopher toward the ballroom.

“I was invited,” he said.

Christopher’s eyes moved over the worn dark coat, plain trousers, and shoes polished carefully enough to reveal their age. No medals. No ribbons. No escort.

“That may be,” Christopher said, lowering his voice as a photographer passed, “but this entrance is for registered guests and senior arrivals. General Thompson’s motorcade will be here shortly.”

William remained where he was.
