He Poured a Farm Entrance Across My Boundary—Then the Survey Found What Ran Beneath It

Chapter 1: The Concrete Was Still Wet When Scott Saw the Line

The concrete truck was already backing toward Scott Mitchell’s hayfield when he came over the rise in his pickup.

Its warning alarm pulsed across the roadside ditch—beep, beep, beep—while an excavation crew waved the driver toward the widened entrance beside Raymond Harris’s old barn. A shallow wooden form had been built along the edge of the gravel road, and gray concrete was already sliding down the chute.

Scott braked hard enough to make the fencing pliers on his passenger floorboard jump.

For half a second he stared through the windshield, trying to understand what bothered him.

Then he saw it.

The new apron did not stop where Raymond’s gravel entrance had stopped for as long as Scott could remember. The forms pushed farther west, into the narrow grass strip beside Scott’s lower hayfield.

Scott parked on the shoulder and climbed out.

Kevin Brown, the contractor, stood in rubber boots with a rake in one hand. “Morning, Scott.”
