They Said His Farmyard Light Was Too Bright—Then He Followed Their Rural Road Rules Exactly

Chapter 1: The Light They Said Was Too Much

Cynthia Young was standing beneath Mark Carter’s new yard light when he came out of the equipment shed, and from thirty yards away he could tell she had not stopped there to admire it.

The LED fixture threw a hard white fan across the cattle gate, the wet gravel turnout, and the first stretch of the private lane that climbed past Mark’s pasture toward four other properties. Rain earlier that afternoon had darkened everything around it. The illuminated gravel looked almost silver.

Cynthia folded her arms.

“This is a road-safety problem.”

Mark glanced up at the fixture. He had installed it three days earlier after the old mercury-colored lamp finally failed. The new one came from the farm-supply store in town. Weatherproof housing, dusk sensor, broad beam. Nothing unusual.

“It’s a light,” he said.

“It’s a very bright light.”

“That was the idea.”
