They Cut Through His Fence for the HOA Gala, So He Made Them Ask Permission

Chapter 1: The Morning Three Fence Boards Disappeared

Jonathan Clark noticed the daylight before he noticed the noise.

A clean vertical strip of morning sun fell across the concrete floor of his kitchen where no sunlight should have been. He stopped with the coffeepot halfway toward his mug and stared through the glass door.

Three boards were missing from his backyard fence.

Not loose. Not broken by wind. Gone.

Through the narrow opening, he could see two men in work shirts moving between his yard and the HOA lawn beyond it. One carried a coil of black cable. The other stepped backward through the gap with a folding table balanced against his hip.

Jonathan set the coffeepot down.

He did not go outside immediately.

That was the habit people sometimes mistook for patience. Jonathan knew better. He disliked arguments enough that he preferred facts before words. Facts stayed where you put them. People moved things around.
