Chapter 1: The Shot Daniel Would Not Approve The orange wind flag was moving the wrong way. Daniel Miller noticed it before he noticed anything else. The flag stood halfway down the valley, faded by years of sun and dust. Every other flag along the firing lane drifted gently from left to right. That one…
Chapter 1: The Woman With The Worn Flight Bag The boarding line had stopped moving. A man in a business suit was arguing with the gate agent about overhead-bin space, and the delay rippled backward through the jet bridge. People sighed. Phones appeared. A child began crying somewhere ahead. Rebecca Carter waited without complaint. She…
Chapter 1: The Bill on the Black Hood Gary Harris saw the paper before he understood the hand on his wrist. It lay flat on the black hood of Patrick Moore’s car, bright white against all that polished paint, with the total circled twice in blue ink. $6,480. The number seemed to float under the…

Chapter 1: The Old Man Beside the Water Cart The front wheel of the water cart caught in a rut, and Edward Mitchell nearly went down with it. For a moment, the whole desert seemed to hold its breath. Chapter 1: The Old Man In The Wrong Room The first thing the young men noticed was not Nicholas Walker’s face. It was the gray T-shirt. It hung loose from his shoulders, faded thin at the collar, the kind of shirt a man kept long after it should have been folded into a rag. In…
Chapter 1: The Old Man At The Corner Booth George Williams knew trouble had found him when the young man in the tan polo stopped beside his table and did not ask if he wanted coffee. The man simply stood there. George kept both hands flat on the old wooden booth table, the left one…
