They Replaced the Farmer Who Kept Their Fields Dry—Then the Autumn Rains Exposed What Was Buried Beneath the Easement

Chapter 1: The Ditch Barbara Said Anyone Could Maintain

Richard Campbell had both arms buried past the elbows in the culvert when Barbara Wright stopped her SUV on the gravel lane and stepped out holding a white envelope.

He heard the door shut but did not turn.

A mat of wet leaves had packed itself against the steel grate beneath the road. The September rain two nights earlier had pushed mud, grass, twigs, and sycamore leaves into a dense brown plug. Water stood almost level with the ditch bank on the upstream side.

“Richard?”

“Minute.”

He hooked his fingers underneath the packed debris and pulled.

Nothing moved.

Barbara remained by the roadside in clean boots that had never been near the ditch before. Behind her SUV sat a pickup Richard did not recognize, towing a small commercial mower and two string trimmers.
